Frequently Asked Questions

Answers to common eSIM questions for European travelers

Getting Started

What is eSIM and how does it work?
An eSIM is a programmable chip built into your device that stores carrier profiles digitally. Instead of swapping physical SIM cards, you download a carrier profile over the internet using the GSMA RSP protocol. For travelers, this means purchasing a European data plan online and activating it in minutes — no SIM card shops, no physical swaps.
How do I check if my device has an eSIM chip?
Dial *#06# on your device. If an EID (Embedded Identity Document) number appears alongside your IMEI, your device has an eSIM chip. iPhone: Settings → General → About → EID field. Android: Settings → About Phone → SIM Status.
What does carrier-unlocked mean?
A carrier-locked device has software restrictions preventing it from using SIM profiles from carriers other than the locking carrier. To use a third-party eSIM, your device must be unlocked. Contact your home carrier to request an unlock — most will do so after contract obligations are met.
Do I need internet to activate my eSIM?
Yes. eSIM activation requires an active internet connection (Wi-Fi or existing cellular data) to connect to the SM-DP+ server and download the carrier profile. We recommend activating at home on stable Wi-Fi before your trip.
Can I install an eSIM before my trip?
Yes. You can install (download) the eSIM profile at home without activating it. The profile sits dormant until you enable it. Check whether your plan's validity starts at installation or first use — plans that start on first use allow advance installation without consuming validity.

Plans & Coverage

What countries does a regional Europe eSIM cover?
Regional Europe eSIM plans typically cover 30-50+ countries. All EU member states are included. Non-EU countries (Switzerland, Norway, UK, Turkey) vary by provider. Always check the specific country list before purchase.
How much data do I need for a 2-week trip?
For a 2-week holiday with moderate use (maps, messaging, social media, occasional streaming): 5-10 GB. For remote workers with regular video calls: 15-20 GB minimum. Unlimited plans are available for heavy users.
When does my plan validity start?
Validity policies vary by provider. Some start at purchase, others at first activation, others at first data use. For advance installation, look for plans that start on "first use" or "first activation."
Can I use eSIM as a mobile hotspot?
Most eSIM plans allow hotspot tethering, but policies vary. Some include unlimited hotspot, others throttle after a threshold, a few prohibit it. Check plan terms before purchase if hotspot is important.
What network bands are used in Europe?
Key 4G bands: Band 3 (1800 MHz), Band 7 (2600 MHz), Band 20 (800 MHz — critical for rural coverage), Band 28 (700 MHz). For 5G: n78 (3.5 GHz) is the primary European 5G band. Most modern smartphones support all these bands.

Troubleshooting

eSIM shows "No Service" after activation
1) Verify eSIM is set as data line. 2) Enable data roaming on eSIM. 3) Toggle eSIM off/on. 4) Restart device. 5) Try manual network selection. 6) Verify device is carrier-unlocked. 7) Contact provider.
QR code won't scan
Increase screen brightness → try different lighting → use manual activation code → ensure device camera is clean → try on different device.
Profile download fails
Check Wi-Fi connection → try different network → verify device is unlocked → check if QR code was already used → update device OS → contact provider for new code.
Data speeds are slow
Force 4G/LTE mode → try manual network selection → check throttle policy → move to better signal location → restart device → check if plan allowance is exhausted.
I accidentally deleted my eSIM profile
Contact your provider immediately. The original QR code is single-use and cannot be reused. Most providers can issue a new activation code for the same plan. This is why we recommend saving a screenshot of your QR code before installation.

Device-Specific

Which Samsung models support eSIM?
Samsung Galaxy S20 and later (S20, S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series), Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series (all generations). Important: availability varies by regional variant — a model sold in South Korea or China may not have eSIM even if the same model sold in Europe does.
Do tablets support eSIM?
Yes, many cellular tablets support eSIM. Apple iPad Pro (all current), iPad Air (4th gen+), iPad mini (5th gen+), iPad (9th gen+) in Wi-Fi + Cellular configuration. Samsung Galaxy Tab S9 series. Wi-Fi-only tablets have no SIM capability.
Why does my iPhone show "SIM Not Supported"?
This error means your iPhone is carrier-locked. Contact your carrier to request an unlock. Once unlocked, the error will disappear and you can install third-party eSIM profiles. Note: some carriers require contract completion before unlocking.
